Cooperation with Cuba in pharmaceutical industry looks promising to Belarus

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the Republic
of Cuba Igor Poluyan believes cooperation of the two countries in
pharmaceutical industry, first of all, setting up joint production
facilities, to be promising. "Cuba's achievements in biotechnologies are
quite significant and can be of major interest to Belarus," the diplomat
told BelTA.

He stressed, on the whole the trade and economic relations of Belarus
and Cuba have real prospects. The diplomat named the growth of direct
trade ties as the first steps aimed at building up the bilateral
cooperation. "In previous years most trade went through mediators, in
particular, through Canada. At present an overwhelming number of mutual
supplies are done directly," said Igor Poluyan.

In his words, in 2006 Belarus-Cuba trade exceeded $20 million. Raw sugar
supplies to Belarus accounted for a major part of the figure. This year
the commodity is practically absent, therefore this year's foreign trade
balance will be positive for Belarus, said the Ambassador. He also
added, the fulfilment of signed contracts, in particular, contracts for
the supply of tractors and buses will allow increasing Belarusian export
to Cuba in H2 2007. "We will considerably exceed last year's figures,"
the diplomat is convinced.
