Cuba is stepping up its oil and natural gas exploration programme and
Trinidad and Tobago, which earns much of its revenue from its own
reserves, wants to give the region's only communist state a helping hand.

Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon made the announcement in a
brief reference to Cuba's new exploration activity during yesterday's
post-Cabinet news conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's.

Gopee-Scoon reported to Cabinet yesterday on her trip to Cuba earlier
this week where she met with several senior government officials
including Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas and discussed ways of
improving the ten-year-old cooperation agreement between Trinidad and
Tobago and Cuba.

'At this meeting we sought to begin the process of achieving greater
degree of reciprocity and this is at the request of the Cubans as it is
very important as well that Cuba benefits from the relationship and that
it is not one-sided,' Gopee-Scoon said

'In the area of energy co-operation in oil and gas technology Cuba has
embarked on an exploration programme and I am certain we can help them
at this, at the early stage as well,' Gopee-Scoon said.
