Phone lines to go underground

Telephone lines will be laid underground in the city of Bayamo, capital
of Granma province, in a pilot project to protect communications during
storms and hurricanes, the Cuban telephone company disclosed Thursday.
If successful, the project could be extended to other provinces, Rodolfo
Olivera, a local representative of ETECSA (Empresa de Telecomunicaciones
de Cuba), told Radio Rebelde.
An article published March 28 in the daily Granma Antiquefone_4 said
that ETECSA "has given priority to an investment program that will
permit it to begin expanding some services [...] in the country.
"By securing credits and technologies with friendly countries, [ETECSA]
will be able to implement a development program in the next several
years that will contribute to a gradual improvement of telephony
services to our population," Granma said.
Priority will be given "to the cities with the lowest telephone density
and to towns with a population greater than 300 that still don't have
telephone service."
The article did not say what "friendly countries" will provide the
credits and technologies.
