Sugar gets new technology

Expanding a pilot project from Matanzas province, seven sugar mills
across the island will receive Brazilian-made sugarcane harvesters and
trucks, Granma reported.

The seven mills — in Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey
and Holguín provinces — are receiving a total of 14 new Case-brand
sugarcane harvesters made in Brazil, as well as 20 "road train" trucks
with 48 trailers.

During the most recent harvest, the Jesus Rabí sugarmill in Matanzas
province put to use six new Case-brand sugarcane harvesters and nine
Case tractors for a total of $6.3 million, as well as seven Scania-brand
road train tractor-trailers. The Sugar Ministry bought the equipment in
Brazil.

The seven mills, which had been idled in the last harvest, will bring
the total of operating mills on the island to 46 in the coming harvest.
The sugar ministry expects a "modest" increase from the most recent
harvest's dismal results.
