GMA fumes over Cuban doctors

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is questioning the fairness of the

government's decision to bring in doctors from Cuba to help Ghana's

health delivery system.

GMA has been on an industrial strike for over three weeks following

discrepancies in their salary structure.

The Health Ministry on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Cuba

government to support the country with about 300 medical doctors.

In an interview with Citi News, the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA,

Justice Yankson, questioned if the Cuban doctors would be paid.

"If you are going to pay them, why wouldn't you rather pay your own

kind?" he asked.

He pointed out that the packages given to the Cuban doctors is a lot of

money compared to what needs to be given to the Ghanaian doctor.

"What a lot of people don't know is that when these Cuban doctors come

into the country we spend a lot of money on them. Sometimes we spend

more money on them than even the Ghanaian doctor," he said.

"So if as a country you think that you can get people from another

country to come and work for you for free for the next 30 years or 20

years so be it," he added.
