Cuba plants more sugarcane

Cuba plants more sugarcane
HAVANA, Dec 21, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX)

Cuba has planted 119,000 hectares of sugarcane by the end of October
2009, an expansion of 5,550 hectares from 2008, Cuban media reported Monday.

The country is expected to harvest between 1.3 and 1.4 million tons of
row sugar.

Given its geographic and climate conditions, sugarcane production has
played a leading role in Cuba's economy since colonial times. The
Caribbean nation has long been one of the world's major producers and
exporters of sugar.

Yet, due to climate problems, harvesting delays and management
deficiency, the amount of per-hectare production dropped from 41 tons to
35 tons compared with the harvest season of last year, the state-run
newspaper Granma reported earlier this month.
