Broward County may evict Lynx Air from airport
South Florida Business Journal - by Bill Frogameni
The Broward County Aviation Department is trying to evict an air carrier
for not paying its bills.
County commissioners on June 23 will consider a motion to evict Lynx Air
International from Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
Lynx, which carries passengers and cargo between FLL and locations in
the Bahamas, Haiti and Cuba, owes the county over $33,000 in rent,
landing and other fees.
The company had a five-year contract with the county that ended in May 2008.
"During the term of the [lease], Lynx demonstrated an inability to meet
their financial obligations when due," the motion coming in front of the
commissioners reads. "As a result, when the [lease] expired on May 7,
2008, the Aviation Department agreed to only enter into a Short Term
Lease in order to give Lynx an opportunity to demonstrate its
willingness and ability to comply with the financial commitments of the
Short Term Lease. However, throughout the term of the Short Term Lease,
Lynx failed to meet its financial obligations."
FLL spokesman Steve Belleme said Lynx is a minor player at the airport.
Year to date, the total passengers and cargo they carry amounts to less
than half of one percent, airport statistics show.
A phone call and email to contact Lynx were not immediately returned.
According to the company's website, it discontinued cargo and mail
service to three Haitian destinations in summer 2008 after hurricanes
caused infrastructure damages.
