Gambia: More Than 100 Cuban Doctors Arrive

A total of 118 doctors from Cuba have arrived in The Gambia to serve in
various health facilities in the country.
The doctors were welcomed at a ceremony held at the Edward Francis Small
Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul.
Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Omar Sey said the doctors will
spend three years in The Gambia as per the arrangement with the Cuban
health minister.
He said the doctors will be sent to different health centres in the country.
Dr Sey appealed to the Cuban doctors to work within the framework of the
community they will be serving and deliver to the best interest of the
country.
Lazaro Herrera Martinez, Cuban Ambassador to The Gambia, said the two
countries have had "this kind of cooperation for a long time".He called
on the new batch of doctors to do their best to maintain the relationship.
Professor MIA Khalil, chief medical director at EFSTH, said The Gambia
enjoys a "smooth fraternal relationship" with Cuba.
He called on the doctors to ensure good management of the health centres
they will be posted.
