The Boulder software company charged by the U.S. government this week
with "trading with the enemy" did not do business directly with Cuba or
the Cuban government, the company's attorney said Thursday.
"It's not as if they were having cigars with Fidel," Lee D. Foreman said
of his client, Platte River Associates Inc.
The company is accused of providing software and computer training -
without a license from the secretary of the Treasury - that was used to
create a model for the potential exploration and development of oil and
gas within the Communist island's territorial waters.
If convicted of breaking the nearly 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo on
Cuba, which remains in place despite Fidel Castro's resignation as
president this year, Platte River Associates could be fined up to $1
million.
