Pernod Ricard spent $320,000 in first quarter lobbying on Cuba trade,
trademark fight

WASHINGTON (AP) -- French wine and spirits company Pernod Ricard spent
$320,000 in the first quarter lobbying the U.S. government on trade with
Cuba and other issues, according to a disclosure report.

The Paris-based company lobbied on bills that would relax or lift the
U.S. trade embargo on Cuba, according to the report filed with the House
clerk's office April 21.

The company also lobbied on a trademark dispute that grew out of a
partnership it established with the Cuban government in the mid-1990s to
sell Cuba's Havana Club rum globally, except in the U.S.

Pernod Ricard has claimed that rival Bacardi Ltd. does not have the
right to use the Havana Club trademark in the U.S., where Bermuda-based
Bacardi sells rum under the Havana Club brand.
